About

The Center for Research Computing (CRC) helps to establish the overall direction of research computing services university-wide in collaboration with research centers and academic departments. It ensures that KU has the best research computing infrastructure available.

CRC houses the KU Community Cluster within the Advanced Computing Facility (ACF). The ACF provides a 20-fold increase in power to support of a diverse range of research including chemistry, biology, pharmaceutical, engineering and and cross-disciplinary projects and has the capability of supporting over 24,000 processing cores.

The center was also designed to provide a more energy-efficient and sustainable solution to KU’s expanding high-performance computing needs.  For example, the facility recovers heat generated by the computing hardware to supplement the Nichols Hall boilers, significantly reducing the consumption of natural gas in the building. In addition, when outside temperatures fall below 45 degrees, the chilled water plant compressors are powered down, and a passive “dry cooler” supports equipment cooling, reducing electricity consumption dramatically.
